Gluck Il Parnaso confuso* and Bertoni Orfeo**

Book Now

In its enterprising pursuit of the rare and the beautiful, Bampton Classical Opera presents an intriguing double-bill to mark the 300th birthday of one of the most lyrical of eighteenth-century opera composers.  In Gluck’s charming and light-hearted Il Parnaso confuso, composed in 1765 and originally sung by four Austrian archduchesses, the temperamental Muses of Tragic Poetry, Lyric Poetry and Music find that their inspiration has unexpectedly dried up at a critical moment.  Ferdinando Bertoni’s passionate Orfeo was commissioned in 1776 by the great castrato singer Gaetano Guadagni in direct rivalry with Gluck’s famous Orfeo ed Euridice: in one of the best-known of operatic adventures Orpheus descends to gloomy Hades to win back his beloved Euridice.  Both operas celebrate the power of music and the beauty of the female voice, and an outstanding cast will reveal the florid energy and ravishing romance of these forgotten masterworks.
