Die Verschworenen (The Conspirators)
Although Schubert’s songs and instrumental music places him amongst the greatest of composers, none of his eight operas has joined the standard repertory. The composer’s exceptional musical talents were recognised at an early age and his composition teacher, Salieri, certainly impressed on him that composers should prove themselves primarily through their dramatic works. After an early experimental start he completed his first Singspiel, Des Teufels Lustschloss, at the age of 16. Of all his stage works only one, the incidental music to Helmina von Chezy’s Rosamunde, was performed in his lifetime.
